So, i fell into my temptation last night and downloaded the album.
All i can say is that I like this album more than any of the animal collective albums.
So gorgeous.

I actually had the time today to sit down and listen in its entirety and i was impressed.

"Young Prayer" was good, but not as near developed as this one. I was also surprised how much it wounded like AC earlier stuff, but released in 2007.

Definitely best solo album... IMO

So for all of you whom are familiar with the album avey and his exwife made together, do you like it ? Why or why not? Do you prefer it forwards or reversed ??
I knew about the album way back but since avey was selling the cd at his show in Chicago earlier this month, it found its way back to me. I've listened to it a few times thru both ways..but I figured y'all would have some kind of input.

Panda Bear at the Electric Ballroom in London (01/11/11)

Hello all,

Panda Bear played an excellent gig last week in London. I'm planning on writing up the gig, as well as posting lots of live footage and (mostly inane) commentary on my blog (http://reasonstjallingshouldlovepandabear.blogspot.com/).

I thought I'd share some of this here. So, without further ado:

Panda Bear & Sonic Boom!

Last week, I got to see Panda Bear play at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. He was not alone!

He was joined by Sonic Boom, who helped produce Tomboy. Mr. Boom was a very welcome addition. Pitchfork's review of Panda Bear's (solo) show at last year's Primavera is telling:

"Whenever I see a guy starting his set like Panda Bear did tonight, stepping out with a guitar around his neck and making his way to a bank of electronic gear and a single microphone, ready to do a show all by himself, I think: This dude has too much to do up there. Performing and singing are difficult enough without essentially mixing live sound in between guitar strums. Which is to say Panda Bear seemed like he missed the rest of the Collective a little bit during this solo show.

Even when performing with Avey Tare and Geologist, Panda is usually the least animated member, content to work his electronics and sing the sort of heavenly, reverb-drenched vocal lines that are now so often imitated. But tonight, without the visuals that usually accompany his solo performances (trouble with the projection set-up), his low-key stage presence made his set, heavy on unfamiliar new material, a tougher sell."

With Mr. Boom in tow, twiddling and mixing, Noah was free to focus on his (guitar and) vocals - thanks Sonic Boom.

The set just was Tomboy; the encore, Person Pitch. There's some good footage of both on YouTube, and over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to post it here, complete with analysis/gibber, taking you through this lovely gig.

Panda Bear Sampling

The use of the Gothic Voices cut is sampling at its best. Those sounds were molded into what they became on I'm Not and something totally new. He took the production of others then created bent notes like a player on a guitar string.

To that, if a guitarist takes a guitar which is linked via midi to a library of sounds - birds chirping, cars on a highway, chords from the song Stone Free - and plays a melody with it he is a musician making music. PB is the same he just happens to use keyboards and boxes instead of a guitar. Musicians started using sounds made by beating on drums, then strings and winds and through the years the sounds that have been manipulated have become more and more complicated but it's about the musician, the player who makes it happen.

The yelping member of Animal Collective, Avey Tare aka Dave Portner, is coming out with a solo album called Down There on October 26 via AnCo's own Paw Tracks imprint. The nine-song record is his first totally solo affair and was recorded by AnCo member Josh Dibb aka Deakin.

According to a press release, Avey's "favorite animals are the otter and crocodile [and] the latter has played a big role in his newest record. " I guess that explains the swampy promo pic above and the album's cover, which you can view along with the album's tracklist after the jump:

there's a download available around the internet of the ten live tracks that he played of all new material. The only one that isn't new is daily routine. I've listened to some of it, pretty exciting. I really can't wait for this to come around this year!!
