Bad AC lyrics

edited October 2011 in Lyrics & Tabs
I am a huge animal collective fan! but that doesn't mean I can't give em a few jabs every once in a while. Lyrics can put me off sometimes, and in some cases there seem to be one of two lines that always prevent an ac song from being perfect (same with Bob Dylan). Maybe I'm picky. My opinions on what good lyrics are flexible and can change especially when explained from a different perspective. I don't like too much silliness in lyrics. Anyway, let's start with "Street Flash" The room is filled with men and cock, Are you serious? I am hoping this is not what Avey is saying unless he's at a cock fight which is pretty lame to put into a song lol. In my opinion he is probably saying something else. Fireworks: It’s the trees of this day that I do battle with for the light. I just don't get it. Why the word "trees"? Are you stumbling drunkenly through a place with too many trees? I tried to make it make some sense by talking to myself.. "No man, it's like.... he is a tree.... and he is trying to rise above all the other trees for the sunlight... get it?" ... No. It doesn't make any sense to me. Could someone explain why he would battle trees? My tears quench five feet of lawn I just creep I cannot yawn

• the street flash one I'm pretty sure is "clocks" if I'm not mistaken... The only lyric on any Anco song that I just straight up don't like is the one from fireworks... "the frightened babies poo"... I'm only 16 and I think the word poo is childish... not that I think he should've said shit or something... I guess I just feel like that song is at least somewhat serious and then those lyrics just kinda ruin it
• getting lost in yr curls that's disgusting avey! <!-- s>__< --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/mad.gif" alt=">__<" title="mad" /><!-- s>__< --> i always like to pretend lyrics are different or what i hear even when i know they aren't right something about don't need friends cuz they don't matter! if only! she's my apple baby! and the girls they are so curious! [and you can't believe the magik!] but anyways yeah i'm so not a lyrics guy so when the lyrics don't mean much or aren't "good" i don't even really notice or care... certain phrases lines stick out and are fun and that's all i need and the rest are just the vocal sounds and such as another THING though i can see how one of the most hated lines would be fireworks babies pooing! haha! it amuses me people letting it bother them!
• I think you're looking at it too metaphorically. Though sometimes using metaphor I think you'll find what's actually happening in AC songs is often quite literal. It’s the trees of this day that I do battle with for the light. I mean, that's just saying how trees make shadows. He isn't a tree, but trees can block out the sun. That's how i've always seen it. official lyrics for cuckoo cuckoo are My tears quench five feet of lawn And I can scream, but I cannot yawn The addition of 'but ' is significant because suddenly you have contrast. I'm pretty sure the song's about growing up, leaving the nest etc, leaving mum and seeing different folks. Like how a cuckoo chick is kinda adopted by other birds. Having said that this is more on what it's like being adult and having responsibilities. You can complain or whatever, you can't really take a break though. That's just me. But honestly, like GO and you yourself said; they're lyrics in a song by a band where the music is really key, don't place too much weight on what he's saying. You'll probably find it easier to read into that way too.
• damn that post makes me wish i WAS more of a lyrics guy... yr damn good at getting the meaning and talking about it! dang!
• Remember, they make this music for themselves and since they tripped so much it's kind of hard not have things other people will like because your ego is softened. And when your ego is softened you see life in more perspectives. And sometimes you have to trip to get these perspectives and if you haven't tripped then you will never see in that perspective. So lyrics by them or other bands sometimes don't make sense. Everything they do makes sense and is fucking amazing haha. The mind is something that has barely been explored and these guys really fucking got something out of doing so.
•
So lyrics by them or other bands sometimes don't make sense. Everything they do makes sense
yr not making any sense! STOP MAKING SENSE <!-- s>__< --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/mad.gif" alt=">__<" title="mad" /><!-- s>__< -->
• Haha gotta love being on 5 different substances at once. I never just read the lyrics by themselves but with the song because it makes sense as a whole. And i thought cuckoo was about being in your later 20's early 30's and being the different person and comforting yourself by saying they're just as crazy as you.In my opinion everyone is crazy(not tripping crazy) because everyone has their own opinions and when they clash or whatever that person needs to label that as something. And if you have your own opinion on what is crazy then for sure your going to label different people crazy. idk...a song can mean anything really. But these guys talked about leaving your childhood along time ago(early albums) and now their older talking about what's happening with them now. So idk...this is what i think haha Edit: I agree with some of phantoms opinions too about how we can scream about shit but we still have to do it. But by the lyrics Im going cuckoo cuckoo were all going cuckoo cuckoo i thought for sure that's what he mean't about comforting yourself. Idk like i said everyone has their own opinion and I never talk about animal collective with anyone except one person and we barely talk about them so that's why im just going like a fucking train.
• I like Strawberry Jam a lot right now.
• pretty interesting band AC. sometimes I get caught with the whole song composition. lyrics is important but the composition impacts more for me. my opinion.
• Sooo, I realize that I'm a bit late contributing here. (x Anyways, I actually have to say that "the frightened babies poo" and "I'm getting lost in your curls" are the only two lyrics that come to mind right away that I don't like as well. Actually, I can't stand them. But whatever, the rest of the songs are good enough to overlook a few bad lines! When I was just starting to get into their music, I didn't particularly like how different the lyrics and themes they used in their songs were from those that I'd heard other bands use. But now, I've changed my mind completely- I love how strange the lyrics they use can be..! <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/razz.gif" alt=":P" title="razz" /><!-- s:P -->

Gone
• ...I have no idea what to say after this, except that I'm currently laughing my ass off. <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/lol2.gif" alt=":lol:" title="lol" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/lol2.gif" alt=":lol:" title="lol" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/lol2.gif" alt=":lol:" title="lol" /><!-- s:lol: -->
• I make up my own lyrics according to what it sounds like they, or almost any other band, are saying. I do not suss them out well and when singing along I make a lot of open noises "waa nee eh wah ohh". There is almost always a however in my pronouncements of this variety and so yes, HOWEVA I find Spencer Krug to be the most amazing lyricist on the planet and I will read his liner notes or look them up.
• There should be a thread for our own AC lyrics. I realized driving the other day and singing to Slow Motion that I was just making up words. Lots of interesting, fun sentences and such.
• I do the same when I listen to songs with unclear lyrics... I've found myself singing along to a lot of Panda's solo music, and either making random sounds that aren't quite words, or singing the words that I hear, which are often not even close to the real lyrics.
Lots of interesting, fun sentences and such.
Hahaa, I know what you mean. Sometimes, my interpretations of lyrics turn out just making me laugh..!
• I used to always read lyrics with an album if they were in the booklet, the first time I listened to it, but now I sort of avoid reading lyrics because I like to get to know them over time, and I love when lyrics I don't hear or notice or understand the first or tenth or three hundreth time i've heard a song emerge out of nowhere and blow me away. I always thought "I'm getting lost in your curls" was actually nice in how simple it was...and innocent. Maybe I am innocent. Maybe y'all are silly.
• You are neither innocent nor jaded. Some of us are jaded. Some of us are silly. This is not a syllogism.

I've though of it both ways though, and curls on top of her head would make more sense since he's talking about just wanting to lay with her. <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/lol2.gif" alt="" title="lol" /><!-- s:lol: -->
• That never occurred to me...and then your name is Royal Pelt...pelt... hmm...anyways, it is very nice to see you here! Consider posting in the Arrivals thread so we can greet you properly, if you like. Otherwise, welcome, have fun, and always be kind.
• NEVER REWIND! fall has damn fell and yes... the pubes... oh god? i don't like thinking of avey that way! he can get a bit psycho / sicko sexual!
• it's the trees of this day that I do battle with for the light. Trees in their ecosystem in forests compete for light. Bigger trees get light and little ones do not. The song street flash in general is pretty gross imagery, with gummy bear apes ingrown hairs cocks and contrasts nice with the walk scenery. It probably smells like dick in there idk. anyway, some of their lyrics get me as well but I'm more picky about music. They usually make great descisions. I think "yeah that's a great idea!" but sometimes I think "what the hell switch something up man!" I'm glad they don't walk on the safe formuladic side because they are creative and if I do disagree then it gives me a chance to be creative and puts the ball in my hands as well. Crazy contemporary composer John Cage encourages everyone to be artists which I think is cool.
• Man, I love their lyrics. Even the ones that don't make sense! It's funny cus sometimes after a while of listening to a song, the lyrics that didn't make sense start to make perfect sense! ~ I actually found "getting lost in your curls" to be one of the cutest things. Imagining Avey mesmerized by girl's hair, and perfect curls- You can interpret a song by AC completely different from the way I see it. And that's the beauty of it. There's no right or wrong. I mean, unless we ask them what they were thinking of and going for at the time they made the song. And even then, I doubt I would change the way I perceived one of their songs. I love them, every single song has a deep meaning and somehow it relates to something I have felt or feel. Okay, maybe not EVERY single song, but most of them! Bahaha, p3ace&l0ve~~~~

It seems to me that a lot of their songs are just words for the sake of words.
• Hmm, it could be too..... Imagine asking them. HEY WHAT'S THE MEANING TO ---------? Avey: Uhm Noah: Well.... Avey: *giggles* they kinda don't have a meaning. Noah: Yeah we just say whatever comes to mind right there and then. Why can I picture this. Even Avey giggleling... He's adorable
• but behind those giggles and warm eyes lie LIES and THE DEVIL HIMSELF oh god? i know thom yorke chooses words just for the SOUND more than the meaning

hahahahahahaha Hail Stan! My favorite lyricists find ways to add both meaning and pleasurable sounds without making either very obvious. Robert Hunter and Leonard Cohen. Holy. Shit.
• I love Thom Yorke. he's not only a lyrical genius but he's so damn gifted with all the artwork.
• I would not like Animal Collective much if it were not for their genious yet sometimes obscure lyrics. Bluish is the first song I ever got into and I thought of the girl I liked and am now dating and her curly hair and I was nearly bursting into tears just mowing the lawn.
• awwww My contribution to this thread would have to be "and the farmer/chef/mayor picks/makes/eats a good thing (and you think you know you don't know what comes next)" I'm pretty much fine up until he says "mayor". That word always cracks me up. He couldnt have thought of a better person to consume this good thing? The mayor? Why the mayor? Why not 'Avey' eats a good thing? Imagine him singing that! This whole part makes me think of those live action ridiculous childrens tv shows that I used to watch long ago, like the Wiggles. Where everyone is happy and dancing and preparing fruit for the damn mayor.
• yeah i was listening to applesauce last night and thought exactly what you just posted
• edited April 2013
:D i'm really glad i'm not the only one who thinks that
• Most of the lyrics to Bluish, not just the "getting lost in your curls" part. Oh and "meow kitties" as well but i guess that's pretty obvious.
• i think the meow kitties really worked back when it was 2004... before garden state or zooey desh and all the forced hyper indie "quirky! random!" etc before youtube! before kitties! it's hard to essplain! i like in bluish when he says that dress that he likes and ze STOCKINGS! oh god!
• Well i wish i wasn't 8 and was aware of AC back in 04! maybe then i'd know.
• tonight you're going to be 17 FOREVER!!
• " 'Let's get out of here' says the boyfriend to her dad " has always taken me out of the song. Like, where the hell is he trying to go with his girlfriend's dad?
• ha! you don't wanna know!
• let's get the hell out of here!
• Haha you're right!
• "Meow, kitties." The song Leaf House is about the book House of Leaves (at least I'm pretty sure). At the beginning of the book, Zampano, an old man, dies because some personification of oppression or something kills him. He feeds cats, and just before he dies some of the cats disappear, others show up mauled and slaughtered.
• i asked avey himself and it not only isn't about the book ... the guy's never even read it! and i think he never will! (just because i told him he should!) he suggested a book to me and damn i wish i had written it down or something i'll never know now what he reck'd!
• these wooden black tiger kiddies!
• Really? In that case, it's bizarre that the title/lyrics are so similar! Very weird.
• I agree, that is very weird. I thought House of Leaves was something that avey would be really into.
• you'd think so but he was probably too late to the ill gotten game then probably thought it was too hipster :( it's not! DAMMIT! emmy!
• The Familiar cats! doggies! gardens... SLUGS
