    The yelping member of Animal Collective, Avey Tare aka Dave Portner, is coming out with a solo album called Down There on October 26 via AnCo's own Paw Tracks imprint. The nine-song record is his first totally solo affair and was recorded by AnCo member Josh Dibb aka Deakin.

    According to a press release, Avey's "favorite animals are the otter and crocodile [and] the latter has played a big role in his newest record.

    I have so many questions... acoustic? Electronic? samples??

    I can't even decide which kind of album I WANT it to be. I really don't care I just want to hear it. But in a way I hope he doesn't release any singles so I'm not tempted.

    I'd like to hear a more rock oriented AnCo. Like Automine almost sounded like Pavement. Hearing something like that but more experimental and crazy would be amazing to me.

    But I'm sure Dave has got something solid cooked up regardless

    I did not see this coming but man am I excited. Panda, Avey, Deacon.... where's geologists solo album? And I agree with you guys I really hope he doesn't release any singles I want to have absolutely no Idea what the album is going to sound like before I hear it. I dont know what kind of music its going to be and I dont even think i want to.

    "Dave Portner AKA Avey Tare was born in Baltimore County, Maryland on April 24th in the year of 1979. He moved to New York City in 1997 where he resides to this day (in south Brooklyn). Though he spends most of his time writing songs and producing sounds (usually in the group Animal Collective) he also is an intense record collector, film fanatic, book head, friend, and traveler. It's from these things primarily that Mr. Portner gets his inspiration, still striving to blend sounds and discover musical territory that seems unfamiliar. His favorite animals are the otter and crocodile. The later has played a big role in his newest record.

    Down There is a world of nine new songs from Animal Collective's Avey Tare. His first official solo full length carries you through a murky world of sound, an alien death world of soul grooves that is both honest and otherworldly. Wait for sundown and turn it up loud. Take a ride on this haunted boat and let yourself be guided through deep sloshy rhythms, waterlogged bass, and moonlit breaks in the canopy that reveal a crisp crystalline pop buzz. Down There was recorded in the month of June by old friend Josh Dibb (Deakin) at the Good House, an old church in upstate New York, surrounded by The Great Swamp and visited regularly by monks, white widows, and groan toads.     well said. I feel the same way. I know far too clearly what Tomboy is going to sound like (or at least, I think I do) so a completely surprise (like that this release was even brewing) would be incredible.

    I really hope that this album is really weird. Weirder than any of the most recent AC stuff because i need to know that there is still a god. a weird god who blesses the universe with his crazy weird things

    Good idea. Last year when Mew's new album came out I was really excited and totally anticipating it for maybe a year + . I put the album on my iPod and listened to it in my room with the lights off, just totally focusing on all the sounds and the songs and the album as a whole, and it sounded so amazing. Really worth the wait.

    That's awesome I love mew with all of my heart. I downloaded an album of theirs to see what it would be like and I was happily surprised. To be honest though I only downloaded it because Mew is one of my top 5 favorite pokemon of all time. I figured a band with the same name couldn't be to bad and I right.

    What a cool album. Love the whole "bayou" thing. Surreal. Like something out of a nightmare where you have been turned into a crocodile.

    lol I didn't even notice that until you said it but it does sort of tickle my middle school humor. Im excited for avey and pandas new albums and the album arts. for some reason album art is a big deal to me. im not sure why either. Also im leaving for Yosemite for a week so ill talk to you all in a week. bye bye

    When I heard AC was taking a sort of break a bit I was very bummed, but now I'm very happy.
    We get the ODDSAC dvd, a new Panda Bear album, AND an Avey Tare album.
    Awesomeness all around.

    Well he's been playing live shows with Prince Rama and now opening for Deerhunter on a couple dates. He's talked about a record for a while now. Should be cool. Deakin's AWESOME

    Yes, we all love Deakin. But I do not see him listed as playing in Atlanta on October 1st: although he just might. This is a stupid thing to be discussing here, I apologize to everyone, it should be on the Deakin on Tour thread. I just want a link to proof that Deakin is playing at the Variety Playhouse on October 1st before I buy tickets, y'know? And what I see is him going from LA to New Orleans.
    How about I ASK HIM when I SEE HIM which will be soon???

    that would be amazing, if he did. But you have to decide if avey going on tour would be worth the months that the tour pushes back anco getting back into the studio.

    but actually, panda will probably tour. so he's already pushing it back plenty. hmmm

    a very long interview with Avey about the album. I have yet to read it all, but its all wicked cool.

    I have been sitting on the Geo progeny information for months and perhaps have now proven myself to the Powers That Be that I am trustworthy. I kept my mouth shut, guys! Not that anyone from the band reads this.

    I'm saving reading the interview for my 10:30 coffee break.
    But what a wonderful birthday relief to finally be able to shed the load of Geo's baby.

    haha! What a secret to keep! Congrats to Geo. Becoming a parent is a beautiful thing and it makes me happy whenever anyone becomes a parent (and can likely live up to that role).
