Your Favorite From Down There?
• So, i fell into my temptation last night and downloaded the album. All i can say is that I like this album more than any of the animal collective albums. So gorgeous. Heres my top three. 1. Oliver Twist 2. Heather in the Hospital 3 Laughing Hieroglyphic They are really fun to dance to. This whole album is a pool of .
• I also gave in as soon as I saw that it was streaming on NPR. Now I'm just waiting for my copy to come in the mail. I still need to give it some more listens though. But so far my favorites are Laughing Hieroglyphic, 3 Umbrellas, and Lucky 1. These are just the ones that stuck out to me, but I'm sure I'll have some new favorites by the end of the week.

• i haven't listened to it a ton but laughing heiroglyphic is so good. i absolutely love this album, it's been great on first two listens it's wonderful being a fan of this band.
•
it's wonderful being a fan of this band.
Agreed!
•

it's wonderful being a fan of this band.
Agreed!
Second! Holy man they are a great band to be a fan of. My favorites, top two, are Ghost of Books and Oliver Twist, Laughing Hieroglyphic is number two after those.
• What do you guys think of glass bottom boat? It always breaks my heart. "Do you know how to get to cemetery island?" "Sure i could take ya there. Just step right in my boat." and then it gets pretty intense from there. This is my favorite song on the album, meaning wise. I can't dance to it like the others, but this is the song that makes me feel the most emotion.
• I really love that track. That piano part is one of my favorite little moments on the whole album.
• Yeah, listened to that this morning. Totally makes your day by breaking it, i guess. It feels good when a song makes you feel like that.
• I went to the NPR stream and only heard Lucky 1. I assume there is more, but where? How/ Oh well, that's ok, because I pre-ordered it and it will arrive, someday, maybe, after you all have gotten tired of it, I will listen with fresh ears.
• I don't think i'm going to get tired of it anytime soon, winiloo. Oh well, I can't wait for you to hear it and to hear your thoughts!
• Yeah, this album has dominated my mind a chose a new favorite song for me. I'll be listening to this for quite the number of days.
• I definitely want to add Heather in the Hospital to my list of favorites. My updated list of favorites in order: (Tied for 1st) Laughing Hieroglyphic Heather in the Hospital Lucky 1 (Tied for 2nd) Oliver Twist 3 Umbrellas Ghost of Books Glass Bottom Boat Heads Hammock Cemeteries
• Favorite song to... Dance to- Oliver Twist Sing to- Laughing hieroglyph Be emotionally touched- Glass Bottom Boat
• I know it's kind of lame because it was the first single, but Lucky 1 is probably my favorite. The lyrics and feeling give me shivers.
• laughing hieroglyphic and oliver twist are tied for #1. everything else on the album is so amazing, i can't really narrow it down
• 1. Laughing Hieroglyphic/ 1. Oliver Twist / 3. Umbrellas
• OK, the download was finally up so I got to listen to this today. Up to this point, I had heard Lucky 1 maybe 3 times on NPR. I have listened to this 5 times in a row. I can't pick a favorite yet because they sound new every single time I listen to them. I can tell you that this album has a lot of pain in it, and I am so very sorry.
• after giving it some time my favorites are now 3 Umbrellas, Ghost of Books, and Heads Hammock
•
All i can say is that I like this album more than any of the animal collective albums. So gorgeous.
yes. I always favored Panda but once this album came out, it blew any of those thoughts away. Down There is a masterpiece. My favorites are Laughing Hieroglyphic and Ghost of Books
• I find that I really can't listen to it anymore. It's a weird album. He never played any of the songs live. It was just either him in his apartment or in the studio. He said he'd never tour it because he didn't want to go "down there" again. I feel the same! I listened to it a bunch when I first got it, and when I get my record player fixed I'll listen to it then (I bought it on vinyl) but in the meantime, I can't. It's too emotionally loaded and private. I do like Ghost of Books but can only listen to it by itself.
• My favourite is 3 umbrellas, I really like the melody. I think I have heard this album through 4 or 5 times now, and it really affects me emotionally. It´s almost too intense to listen to. I wouldn´t use the word dark, because I listen to music that is darker than this, and it doesn´t affect me the same way. There is just so much feeling in the vocals. One of the things that attracted me to AnCo at first, was their ability to write songs from a happy place without being cheesy. Down There is certainly not from a happy place. It will be interesting to see how I feel about it after 10 listens.
• I haven't listened to this album very many times (which I'm kinda surprised at myself for). The emotional loadedness makes it seem really beautiful to me. It is definitely also sort of strange too. This might sound weird but I feel kind of honored when I listen to it, because it is so personal. I feel like I'm Avey's letting me into this really sad and painful part of life. I don't mean ME specifically of course, he just seems like a very brave person for making music so honest and raw.
• i like the young prayer / down there THING of Make Album as Therapy get those feelings out so you can move on / feel better! that's been a big part of making music for me personally!
• yeah i agree. thats just another element that adds to Down There for me. parts of Young Prayer are really good but al of of the songs sound the same to me. Its probably my least favorite acoustic ac related. but i definitely respect the way it was made. creativity from raw emotion and using the music to get over something.
• My favorite is the opener "Laughing Hieroglyphic". I hope AC plays at least one song off Down There on tour. The length of the record feels just right too.
•
I hope AC plays at least one song off Down There on tour. The length of the record feels just right too.
we'd all like that but avey said he's not playing any down there songs so
• Really? when did he say that? I thought I remember him saying he's just never really thought to play them live. But I agree, I don't think he'd play those with the whole Collective.
• He's said multiple times that Down There won't be played live. Tomboy, on the other hand, might. We'll see. I want to see the whole band do Slowmotion or something.
• Man, I gotta hear some more Avey interviews! I love reading them or seeing them.
• Three Umbrellas is definitly the champion for me.
•
Man, I gotta hear some more Avey interviews! I love reading them or seeing them.
Yeah, he seems very down to earth.
• 1) Cemeteries - I guess that makes me a depressed person? :P 2) 3 Umbrellas 3) Oliver Twist
• Oliver twist and down there are my favs
• Ghost of Books, Lucky 1, Laughing Hieroglyphic the album itself is a work of art, as all of you have stated before.. but you all were wrong about him not playing it live. he was even wrong himself ! Released in 09 and does a tour at the end of 2011 ? very weird. but he sure did play about 4 of them off the album when I saw him (of course they were all tinkered with so it wasn't exactly the same as the album sound..some were even better in my opinion) I have the audio for the show I went to if anyone wants it ?? He played new songs that he wrote too such as Song for Jerome, Sometimes, Death Raga, etc but I'm sure some of you have already heard those but the quality of the recording I have is spectacular I must say
• released in 2010* my bad..
• 1) Laughing Hieroglyphic 2) Ghost of Books 3) Oliver Twist
• Oliver Twist and Cemetaries
• 1) Laughing Hieroglyphic 2) Cemetaries 3) Oliver Twist Two months later and I guess that my opnions have changed.
• Definately Heather in the Hospital. C'est tres magnifique!
• Glass Bottom Boat/Ghost of Books/Cemeteries breaks my heart. its the perfect representation of aveys music smartiness. (i would get ready to this album my freshman year and lucky one would come on just as i was enduring the miserable walk to class, a perfect optimistic push for the final trudge; twas a blessing.) fav songs Ghost of books Laughing hieroglyphic Heads Hammock (the end when he is wailing in his falsetto...)
• Listening to this on a sound system with good bass is amazing
• The song remains the same, for me. Why no love for 3 Umbrellas?
• Claude, i dont really like the melody of 3 umbrellas. the sample at the beginning (one of them might jump oout and dooo youuu in) saves it for me
• Love that sample. I dunno, 3 Umbrellas to me is some killer, lush pop. The Steve Reichian tropical marimbas, the Panda Bearesque vocal harmonies, and sweet guitar lick all make it come together for me.
• I love 3 umbrellas, it is my 5th favorite off the album.
• Oooooooooooooh Oliver Twist, that beat. Mmmm that beat. When the kick goes 4/4, and the way his voice is affected when he says "get me to the bottom"
• Or as our lyrics section would say "get me to the (brock)?" Totally agree that the section you are talking about is a really great part of the song and even one of the most fantastic parts of the whole album.
• my favorite part of oliver twist is the first couple vocals, the combination of voice filter and bass have given me goosebumps many times
• Hmmm... I feel like i cant really pick a favorite off of Down There because of how well it works as a whole album. Hell, the first two times i listened to it, i never realized Heather in the Hospital had transitioned into Lucky 1 because they flow so seamlessly into each other.
• ive listened to laughing hyroglyphic way too many times
