kanye west has some gems but im not a fan of his whole discography. i just like listening to hard-beat gangster rap. it makes me feel cool. same with certain electronic/dance music
in terms of rap i love MF Doom, specifically his first album operation: doomsday, Wu-Tang (specifically enter the 36 chambers and Liquid Swords), Eminem (only slim shady and marshall mathers lp) and A Tribe Called Quest. other than that its just various albums and songs by alot of other artists.
in terms of electronic i really like Skream and SBTRKT
Yes I do like rap. I listen to mostly mainstream stuff in that genre though - Jay-Z is good, Kanye is very good (his last album will be looked back on as one of the greats, it's heavy and it's pretty close to a masterpiece).
Ticon, I'd been meaning to listen to Wu-Tang.
I'm a bit surprised no one mentioned Public Enemy?? They're pretty well known guys, and they deserve it from what I've heard (which is only Nation of Millions up til now)
I don't think I can handle She goes channel to channel Cold lookin' for that hero She watch channel zero
Also, anyone know Cannibal Ox (they're more underground actually)? They have this one album The Cold Vein which sounds pretty good, I have to relisten and pay attention to the lyrics now.
i love that can ox record. they just put out a b-sides/rarities thing, but it's just pretty good (although maybe that's because cold vein is so great that the other stuff pales in comparison). everything el-p does is fucking brilliant. have you heard cancer4cure? it's awesome stuff
public enemy is sort of like the rap skinny puppy; all the stuff the bomb squad did for them is just so DENSE that you have to listen to it a million times before it even sort of starts making any sense. I remember listening to nation of millions the first time and it was just like listening to mind: the perpetual intercourse where i just spent like 10 minutes going "...that's...uh...a synth? or a bass? maybe it's a drum sample that's fucked up?".
I thought most rappers act like they're better than everyone else? Arrogance (or at the very least, confidence) is a pretty prevalent characteristic in hip hop
oops i meant to say other people think that the rappers are better than everyone else. tbh lyrical ability doesnt make the music better. its all about the beat and the artist's flow/delivery/voice
I like Kanye a lot, and Wu Tang is really great, but tbh i'm not really big on rap. Eminem just makes me sick, with some of his lyrical content, specifically 3am and kim, but there are a whole bunch of other songs he's written that i can't bear listening to. I mean what's the point in them? Those songs are just evil, what does the listener get out of listening to them?
But back on topic...I just listened to the second half of Feels while night driving. Great experience... It's probably gonna be on my album rotation for a while now because of that.
Ticonderoga, i just read your post, and i almost agree. Lyrical ability does make the rapper better, but it has to come second to the things you mentioned (beat, flow/delivery)
Someone showed me an immortal technique song about some kid getting into drugs, joining a gang, and then accidentally raping his mother (i know) and then proceeded to call it "real music" I guess because of how disturbing it is
Most of Kanye's songs/albums are great imo, except for Gold Digger, which is forever ruined because I had the misfortune of hearing it on Glee *shudders*.
I still love Gold Digger though, because it's actually one of few songs that both me and my little brother like. I sing the "She give me money" bit (badly) and he tries to rap (badly) or vice versa, but it's funny either way :)
Vesufius: I don't listen to Eminem, but have you heard Stan? I like that one a good deal, it's dark without being 'woohoo-shock-violence-and-rape-hooray'
vesufius, have you heard any old eminem? like slim shady and marshall mathers lp? those arent that bad in terms of grossness (with the exception of Kim). my theory is that anyone who doesnt like emninem or think he's not that good hasnt listened to the slim shady lp
Oh wow - I just realised I've never listened to the Slim Shady LP!
I'm listening to a bunch of rappers right now: Kid CuDi (a lot better than Pitchfork gives him credit for) and Raekwon (Cuban Linxx 1 which I've heard is a classic or something). Anyone like either of them?
Kid Cudi is pretty good but then again I have not really heard that many songs by him. Right now I really like Childish Gambino particularily his song Heartbeat. He rapped over AC's My Girls and it didn't turn out well. He should have just sampled it because the rapping and the song together was a really distracting mix.
I havent heard the Slim Shady LP, and only a couple songs off of the Marshall Maters LP, so i could be judging him too quickly. But someone showed me a skit off of one of those albums called Ken Kaniff or something and...oh god that shit really makes me cringe.
Ive atill got a lot of respect for albums like Liquid Swords, cuban lynx 1, and illmatic. And i really like my beautiful dark twisted fantasy (all of the features on that album make Kanye look soo good because they're really not even in the same league). Im just not interested enough in rap to look further into it.
Why did Oasis not see that their B-sides were better than a lot of there other album tracks. I was a huge Oasis fan back in the day and I still love Definetly Maybe and (WTS)MG?. (I can't tell if you wanted to be pointing out how much Oasis copied from the Beatles, but whatever the case may be i'm sticking to my liking of Oasis)
I am a huge rap fan. It's todays folk music because it's made by the people and anybody can do it with just their phone if they wanted to. I am pretty good at rapping though I don't want to be a rapper. My really good friends are in a Milwaukee rap group called the Astros (because they study the sky). If you ever hear of them get their mixtape (I'll post a link if it's free) because I love their music. I like Kanyes music just not him as a person. hhahahahahah. I love Dr Dre, Bone Thugs, BIGGY SMALLS, WU TANG!, Some eminem, Juicy J, Curren$y, a little wiz khalifa, two chainz
Oh and Yukbon, I never replied to the El-P question. I gave Cancer4Cure a listen, and it's not really for me I think. I WILL give it a second listen for sure though, because I'm sure it will grow on me eventually.
honestly i'd recommend his first solo album over this one ("fantastic damage") but here's a playlist of his stuff that i've been listening to at work: http://grooveshark.com/playlist/El+p+Mix/74478171
James Blake's Klavierwerke and CYMK EPs sound a lot like Untrue. SBTRKT and Schlomo also sound similar. All of them kind of blend two-step, dubstep and US RnB. Four Tet sort of sounds like Burial except his msuic is more organic. Then you can get into more pure dubstep - Kode 9 and Spaceape, Zomby, Mount Kimbie and Blackdown.
