Vinyl

I just got a record player and was wondering if any of you guys have awesome record collections. If so, what are the gems in it? Any Animal Collective? I think I might dish out some cash on some animal collective records.... edit;;;; I just ordered Spirit...I need help deciding though. I could get Merriweather with an EP (LP? Whatever...) or Merriweather with Person Pitch or just get Spirit...What do I do!?!?

• good decision on going to vinyl. there are a lot of AC records you can get, i've got strawberry jam and its amazing, the only one i can't find is Feels i think they made a limited number. Pink Floyd is great on vinyl same with Zep and the Beatles, actually pretty much anything is great on vinyl, its a much fuller sound. check out In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel if you're into them, and Antidotes by Foals two websites for rare or slightly damaged (but still very playable, usually the covers are damaged or imperfect) are Audophile International and Records By Mail happy vinyl hunting
• hey, thanks for the tips. I'll check those sites out! I actually got some Zeppelin initially to go with the player. I saw one strawberry jam on Amazon and it was 100 bucks! Good thing you already have it!
• damn, i got mine for like 35-40 which i thought was really expensive let me know if you find any good ones, like Explosions i haven't seen any vinyl for them but that would awesome.
• yeah, I just checked those sites and there is Danse Manatee, which is pretty tempting. Though sadly enough it is two dollars too expensive for me. The hard part for me is I have a Visa gift card and not all websites accept it...like amazon oddly enough. So, hopefully one of those works for me.
• oh wow! that's cheap. I decided to actually read the information that went with the card and I just had to register it online to be able to use it online (kinda feel stupid). But...That's pretty damn tempting. I'd love to have the Strawberry Jam vinyl. Thanks for the help!
• the first 2 vinyl records i owned were THE MONKEES and NIN - PRETTY HATE MACHINE ... oh man i loved it! then i got really into buying cheap used vinyl (some pretty lame ones but also some good ones... def. strangely got into buying the lesser bowie albums on vinyl... all the bad ones!) i don't have that many more current-ish ones and i would have got more but my record player conked out in 03 and i STILL haven't gotten a new one (i don't know what that IS!) ... the last record i got was OK Computer on vinyl! (it was only 18 bucks... not as bad as i'd of thought! ... is it common for albums on vinyl to be REALLY expensive? like over 40 bucks? jeez that hardly seems worth it to me!) the best thing i have is from my dad... the very first REM release (Chronic Town EP) ... i also have murmur!
• that's awesome. Love the first two. OK Computer would be sweet for vinyl, 18 bucks is a good deal. Over 40 is kind of expensive...It depends on where you look. I got some awesome ones at Goodwill for a dollar each...Just looking through the array of Animal Collective ones online, the EP's are a little over ten bucks and (some of) the full albums are around 20. If you look at early Modest Mouse vinyl they are INSANELY expensive. I saw the Moon and Antarctica somewhere for 200+? dollars. And to think that I half-owned all of their super expensive shit before my house burnt down.... If you do get a new recordy player (which you should!) look for a good deal! Mine was 15 dollars at Goodwill (i'm not sure if that have those everywhere?). If you look you can find a good deal somewhere, i'm sure.
• some of the best records i've gotten have been really obscure ones in bargain bins. there was one vinyl store in park slope, where i used to work and i got a bunch of great blues and old rock records. Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones' No Way! is one of the best albums i've ever bought that and Speaking In Tongues by The Talking Heads
• I have MPP, Spirit and Manatee. Other favourites are Bowie EPs, Small Faces greatest hits and DEVO Freedom of Choice. Also Split Enz's True Colours, if anyone knows them.
• "I don't know why sometimes I get frightened"
• That's right.
• OOH, is this the thread for me. Got a record player and some vinyl for Christmas, the vinyl was all vintage from my grandma -- Band On The Run, Magical Mystery Tour, ABBEY ROAD, Paul McCartney, Hall & Oates, and a bunch of others... Plus my MPP record I got back in August for my birthday. Awesome. Yesterday my cousins were over and never touching a turntable in their lives thought they could play DJ and touch up my Abbey Road, which resulted in a scratch all over side 2 (my favorite side of AR). Now it's skippy. Darn it all to heck.
• ahhhh! that's awful, KidGrizzly! You've got a great set of vinyl there. I almost bought a copy of the Magical Mystery Tour the other day, the case was beautiful...but then I looked at the record and it was scratched to shit. I'm glad to hear that most everyone here are vinyl fans. It's the way to go.
• I've got merriweather and strawberry jam on vinyl, as well as the peacebone single i've also got the killers sawdust album on vinyl, mainly because I love the album art and it matches my room. they're all in frames i take them out occasionally to listen.
• i always fantasize about being able to play fake DJ and dink around with vinyl records while they play (esp. if you had 2 going at once!) but yeah i don't wanna ruin shit [i don't know how things work!]
• My heart went HEUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH when you said the part about Abbey Road getting scratched up. I'd have hurt them very very very badly.
• I was very, VERY upset, but they still didn't get why it was such a big deal.
• If you get any records pressed in small runs, like punks bands, esp. the Alternative Tentacles label, look for the words engraved on the smooth part near the center hole. Sometimes they are 2 line poems, other times they are just silly or inside jokes. I collect colored vinyl 7" (jockeyed at a college station for 5 years)
• that sounds awesome. I once (shared ownership) had an Ugly Casanova vinyl. One side of one of the discs had this elaborate beautiful etching on it. I like colored vinyl...The only one that comes to mind for me is Life of Arctic Sounds by Modest Mouse. I've seen it in red, white, blue, and black.
• i was a college DJ for like 5 months it was so fun! but very scary! i'd get so nervous!
• Our university radio is pretty commercial so it's hard to get in on sadly.
• ha! ours was DAMN uncommercial... i played PRIDE & FIGHT / ALVIN ROW / MEET THE LIGHT CHILD and a crapload of other Ac Hits!
• awesome! What a sweet radio station, then. My friend DJ's at her college radio and she plays indie stuff a lot. Nothing as unique or experimental as Animal Collective. EDIT;;; My SPIRIT vinyl came today!!!!!!! I'm so thrilled. I even took a picture of the box it came in.
• wholey moley I wish I had my own ac radio station. you should post a picture of the vinyl tigers! if you haven't already...
• I haven't, but I will! I have some pictures. I need to take more. Like...of the unopened vinyl. I almost cried taking the plastic wrapper off (not really) but it was kind of hard to. It felt...wrong. I'm going to be getting Person Pitch on Wednesday too, which i'm thrilled about. I haven't listened to all of that album in one sitting before.
• There it is! Playing on my 15$ record player! There it is, there it is! I was a little bummed that the corners of the case were kind of...scrunched? But...whatever. So, on the left (for those of you who don't own the record) is the little story about Panda and Avey with their Rythm sticks and invisible friends. On the right is the credits. I like how Panda is credited with 'perfect percussion'. there's some insane drawing on the back!! and here's a picture of me holding it, since I thought I should do that. I look incredibly sinister, I think.
• Did you get lollies with yours?
• lollies? I guess not.
• Damn. I got lollies sent with mine.
• like lollipops?! I'm super jealous, whatever lollies are!
• Candy I guess.
• that's amazing. Did they have special Animal Collective wrappers or something?
• Nah, that would have been cool.
• I just realised - you should have kept the plastic on in a way that it slides on and off easily ( I did this). Oh no Tigers!
• Oh no! I wish I had thought of that! That would've been brilliant!! i'll have to make sure I do that with Person Pitch at least. Also, i'm glad I didn't miss out on special edition AC lollies. That would've been something to brood about for a few minutes, at least.
• that looks pretty awesome, can you type up the story on the left and post it here? i'm curious and need a bedtime story!
•
Not long ago a young boy named Avey and his friend Panda Bear roamed the patch work which covers the land (some call it forest). They were looked upon by Pan and raised by fairies and the Angels of light who play deep within the Wood. 'Let's make the music of childhood,' Avey shouted one day as the two played. Panda thought this idea was a good one. 'I can use my magical Rhythm sticks and you can play your Sun harp,' he said. So the two began to create melodies and Panda brought rhythms from every direction while Avey sang. All of the songs were about wooden toys and invisible friends and filled with the light of the forest. This is the first group of songs they played.
I took it from wikipedia, but that is the true little story there. Epic!
• that writing is exactly how I tell stories when I'm forced to make them up on the spot. AWESOME.
• YES! That story is so beautiful and simple. I love it. My heart almost melted when I saw it on the inside of the vinyl.
• Got the Person Pitch vinyl in the mail today. I'll put up pictures of that for y'all too. It had a poster inside! How exciting! Two discs, can't wait to listen to it! Edit; And my record player is broken. The moment I put the record on the needle SLID across the entire record! jfdalskjfdlsajfdskal
• ooooohhhhhhhhhh nooooooooooo! Try adjust the tone arm screw, if it has one. We used to tape pennies to the top of the tone arm, right at the end above the needle cartridge when that happened. Try it with a record you don't care about!
• luckily, it was an easy fix. The needle was off center.
• Person Pitch came with a poster! How cool is that?! here is the other side with the infamous list of influences: I currently live with my grandparents, and my grandmother constantly tries to find something wrong with the things that I listen to. Her reaction to this cover: "Is that a bunch of naked people?!?" my response "...no...its kids in a swimming pool, wearing bathing suits with animals..." I love how Bros. takes up an entire side of a disc:
• nice! ... those pics were used for all the singles: i'm not / comfy double ... carrot excepter split ... broze ... take pills... i wonder how the non-used ones connected... search 4 delish was on some compf way back in 05! ... so really ponytail was the only one not featured any the where else... (rightfully so! it's the weakest song on there! oh god!]
• oh! That's good to know, GO! I thought they seemed a little random...I'm not sure about the rest of them. Yeah, side D is my least favorite disc side. It sucks because my favorites are B. and C. So I have to switch discs! Unfair. Its just one sleeve two, so those two discs aren't always easy to get in and out of there.
• that's def. one of my least fave. aspects of vinyl because i love just getting into an album and not having it broken up into chunks... even if it's just a minute or 2... i can't imagine these albums where you have to do it 3 times during the course of the album instead of just the one time for a 1 double-sided LP as for grandparents reaction to music i'll never forget in like... 2001ish? my grandfather acting like jeff buckley was some damn annoying rock and roll music and i joked to my dad "how would he react if i put on the aphex twin?" hoho! back in december i brought over a burnt cd that had Decemberists and Devendra Banhart on it and strangely he didn't really dig the decemberists songs even though some had a polka like feel to it! ... yet he was okay with the banhart stuff? i'll never understand how some people react!
• yeah, i've discovered that problem with vinyl. It sucks a little. I mean, especially with Person Pitch. The songs sound so great running together! But then there is something a little magical about the extra effort needed to listen to records... crazy grandparents! I wonder sometimes how my grandparents would react if I played certain songs for them! My grandmother was worried once that I was going to kill myself (when I was a freshman maybe?) because I was listening to Under the Bridge, that Red Hot Chili Peppers song. There is just a huge generation gap between us. that is suprising, GO! I was hoping my grandmother would Dig PP because its pretty chill. She just said it reminded her of African music. At least she wasn't worried about my state of mind.
this is the release of Animal Collective's sophomore album, never before available on vinyl, released here as a part of a DMM series of the band's back catalog. Remastered direct from the original master and pressed on heavy weight vinyl audiophile discs. This release is strictly limited
I wish I had money to throw around.
• I saw it at my local record store, but went for Spirit in stead because it is my favorite.
