The Beach Boys

edited November 2010 in Audible
There have been lots of comparisons going around about AC and the Beach Boys. I was wondering what other bands have adopted the Beach Boy's, Pet Sounds/Smile sound?

• I'm not sure about this myself, I haven't really listened to the Beach Boys aside from a few songs, but maybe you can find something on wiki?
• Had to bump this thread. I listened to SMiLE when I really started liking 60's psychedelic music. Incredible album. In-fucking-credible. Any AnCo fan should listen to it. You will see similarities in the music - it's crazy. Here's a wiki about the album: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smile_(T ... s_album%29 There are quite a few versions out there, including Brian Wilson's 2004 creation of the album. However, I would say the way to experience the album is with the Purple Chick version. Just Google that stuff and you'll find a link - I know it's on Pirate Bay. Here are a few of the songs that IMO sound the most similar to AnCo in regards to musical structure (or a lack thereof!):
• well dang... i had heard the 04 smile, pet sounds, surf's up, holland [for some reason! AGAIN!] and various trackies but i guess i hadn't heard the original smile stuff for some reason just hearing these songs i don't know... i can appreciate how out there it is for the time it was [esp. with how pet sounds was very NOT out there and i never quite got what was the big deal] but at the same time the stuff doesn't really grab me... bands like this or the beatles and so many others today it's like they could have the SONGS... and the EXPERIMENTATION... but rarely mix the two together in a satisfying way... i don't know what that is!
• Yeah. It's really about just appreciating the fact Brian Wilson was making this music in 1966. Before the psychedelic era really kicked in. And yeah, Pet Sounds is an awesome Beach Boy's album but I do completely agree: there isn't anything cuuuuurazy on there. It's just a damn good album that expanded on the the Beach Boy's vocal abilities combined with a new complexity to the music brought to the table by Brian Wilson. What I hear in SMiLE that gives me a grin is the overlapping vocals, the random sounds, and the songs taking sudden turns. Things that for the band were new - and for the time.
• This is the first thing that came to my mind when hearing Person Pitch. Pet Sounds and especially Smile by Brian Wilson, Pandas vocal style and ACs harmonies is very very close to Brians, and also similar in production and instrumentation. I think the Beach Boys get overlooked because of Surfin USA, Little Deuce Coop etc.. But an objective listen will uncover theirs to be some of the greatest music ever recorded. Good Vibrations is a masterpiece thats just been overplayed. This is also why all-though I find ACs music very approachable an doable as a musician, Noahs vocal talent make them untouchable. So 1 more for the Beach Boys.
•
Good Vibrations is a masterpiece thats just been overplayed. .
but under-listened to. It's hard for me to listen to Person Pitch because I am so familiar with the Beach Boys and I...I would never diss Noah on this site. I shall let it rest at that.
• beach boys ain't got squat on ze ac! just like: who needs beatles when you got OTC! uh!

• I listened to person pitch like twenty times in a row and now I get it. Sorry I'm so lame and it took me so long...
• I am glad I found this thread, I know it is old. I was going to start a new thread, but I thought I'd bump this one instead. I play the shit out of Beach Boys on a regular basis, particularly SMiLE. For example The Element: Fire reminds me of #1: Also this song reminds me of a LOT of Animal Collective I'm sure it is obvious to anyone that AC has 60's psychedelia influences, but I think Beach Boys may have influenced animal collective in particular. I think its great, especially since Beach Boys didn't get much acclaim for their experimental sounds until much later. What ya'll think?
• Love the Beach Boys, I have The Smile Sessions on vinyl. So much joy.
• I would love to have it on vinyl, but mp3 will have to do for now. But I can't help listening start to finish every time. I saw them at bonnaroo. Screamed my head off.
• Fantastic, I would love to see them live. Have you listened to the new album? I listened to the single, wasn't that happy about it, still pleasant though.

Yeah they played a couple. Only one was somewhat "pet soundsy". It did kinda annoy me. Its like brian wilson was like "oh I was wrong about all that DRUG music, it made me CRAZY? see kids? don't do drugs. Make more beach pop shit" Lets just remember the Brian Wilson that was losing his shit...and making groundbreaking music.
• Well he's obviously proud of his drug music, he remade Smile twice.
• what if he went nuts trying to remake it over and over again it became his white whale! AGAIN!
• and then right after his death an album comes out under the name THE SAD KLOWNE titled: FRoWNE :(
• but then it's the best one!!
• so they made a movie about it!
