Merriweather Post Pavilion Reviews

maybe we can get a single thread going with reviews of the new album; I've been a lurker here for a while but have never posted). One of the sites I'm visiting more and more is Spectrum Culture, which gives the album a 4.5 rating. http://spectrumculture.com/2009/01/anim ... ilion.html

• After listening to the full studio version of the album for a few weeks, id give it a 9 out of 10. My Girls and Brothersport are the most accessable to me, but Daily Routine is my favorite, all the tracks go together well for a listen through, it's an interesting step for Animal Collective, and i think its great.
• There's one in this thread. • Here's a good one copy -> pasted from some internet forum:
This is the new album that everybody and their mother is creaming about. The one that Pitchfork gave a 9.6 to. The one that Time said was the best album of the century. Well, I can tell you that it absolutely, positively sucks. I am listening to it now for the second time and it sounds like somebody is taking a shit on my ears. How anybody can listen to this and find a single compelling minute anywhere in the album is beyond me. I even liked the Panda Bear album, but this is just too much. Where do I start? Reverbed, grating, insistent Beach Boy vocals wedded to ambient music that displays a stunning lack of both musicianship and composition. The "songs" drag on forever because they have no structure or form. Self-consciously "arty" ambient music, replete with effects like creaking doors, bubble pipes, and spoons dropping that do not mean anything in the context of the composition. They even throw in a harpsichord for maximum white wig, tobacco snuffing, cherubs on the ceiling effect. This is awful, awful music and I seriously question the taste of anybody who admits to liking this. You are either tone deaf or a bullshit hipster poseur if you admit to liking this crap. There is no other choice.
• im actually glad to hear some criticism
• I really don't like that sort of criticism at all. It's really just smack talk and you can find it all over the place, as much as most of us love the shit out of animal collective, there are a large number of people who hate them with just as much passion. Don't ask me why, I don't go writing reviews about their shitty ass music. I just ignore it, and I wish people that write reviews like the one above could just ignore us, and our music as well. I'm so sick of being called things like an "elitist" or a "hipster" just because of my tastes. I rarely get to share music like this anymore just because so many people tend to dislike them. It really almost sucks being an AC fan, to love something so much and not get to share that love with very many people. He’s not just Insulting the band either, he's insulting the fan base, like we have no taste in music at all...right... as mad as it makes me to read some douches pissy tantrum about music he doesn't "get" I feel just as sorry for him, cause he's missing out on great stuff. But there is so much anger in his review, that's one thing I notice about all these hateful reviews...Anger so much anger, if I dislike music I don't get this heated. I have read some seriously nasty reviews before, this one is nothing compared to some reviews I've read, but it brings back some of those older memories of the hatred people seemed to have for AC (I won't get into it here, not the place). Maybe that’s the secret; maybe animal collective just doesn't appeal to the angry soul. Maybe it's a good thing he's not a fan cause when I’m dancing around in some tribal trance at an AC show token on a nice fatty, I don't feel like getting shanked by some bloodthirsty moshpit forming fuck. O and as for my review for MPP…. Fucking 10000/10, I’m tired of seeing 4.5/5….9/10… A- lol. Simply put this is one of the greatest recordings ever imo, and blows the shit out of any rating system, this is an absolutely mindblowing album for me and I can’t wait to see them this May…alone ☹… but hey can’t force people ta like what you do. EDIT- and why is it the sounds of a creaking door, bubble pipes, or spoons dropping, are not to be considered tools in which to make music? they are sounds are they not? I can't understand people who have all these limits and restrictions wrapped around their brains, like the only mediums avaliable to create music are a guitar, a bass, drums, and some vocals....ugh!
• That is an amusing review. Here's mine: I don't even cry, and MPP just about makes tears come out of my face. OF JOY.
• I am really a newbie to AC, so this album is the perfect introduction for someone who is a avid listener to bands like Passion Pit. The first AC song I ever heard was "My Girls". It completely blew me away in the sense that it had accompanied sounds and styles I'd never experienced. After overplaying "My Girls" for about a month, I searched the name and found "Brothersport", "Summertime Clothes", "Lion in a Coma", etc... and was amazed by the well... amazingness of the music. I'd give this album a 100%, becuase it puts so many different emotions on the table that I didn't even know I had. A great followup to Strawberry Jam (which is amazing in itself). Cheers, Jay
• here's a review: it stinks! like a beautiful brokay of flow hers! guppers!
