Cassettes

There is a vinyl thread...so why not a cassettes thread? Maybe it's just because I have an older sister who was a true 90s teen and who passed down her awesome tapez and tapes. They sound classic, crispy, and they are incredibly nostalgic given the time period of the music on them. Thoughts.

    One of my roommates goes to school for Recording Arts and he said that cassettes are one of the greatest ways to hear music sometimes. Depending on what you're listening to of course. But their sound is very unique. When I was 5 or 6 I had a cassette with songs remixed by Mickey Mouse and his pals, and I used to force my mom to put it on every time I got in the car.

    I used to have Disney mixes too. I'm glad you made this thread, paddy, it makes me happy. I bought some Rush cassettes at Goodwill the other day for a dollar each, I haven't listened to them yet but can't wait. My record player is so badass (and from Goodwill too) that it plays tapes too.

    I have hundreds of cassettes. I am pre-cd. I did so much mixing and recording, I got really good at it (I was a dj, like on the radio, did a freeform show). Cassettes give a more analog feel and can be a richer sound. Vinyl is awesome, cd's are good, but cassettes kick ass.

    I used to have all my cassettes that I would listen to in the car when I drove with my grandma. I haven't really spent much time exploring them otherwise, but dammit, I intend to. In relation to my tapes, I have one very distinct memory. I was about four or so I think, and it was raining outside and I was sitting in the back seat of my grandma's car and watching the raindrops run down the windows. We were at the corner store by my house, and she ran in to pay for gas. One of my little kid tapes was playing, and the song went something like "You're a VIP... something something something.... you're a very important person to me" or something like that.

    Well, I thought it was Mister but didn't want to be a dolt nor did I feel like going back and checking so I hedged my bets. My favorite tapes are ones that my pen pals, all in their 20's and 30's, made for me when I was 16 and wanted/needed to be introduced to all sorts of music. That's how we did it, pen pals and such, back in the day. And now, 25 years later, those tapes STILL play and still are great! It was so much fun getting the right segues, something at least i can't do with mixed cds. I have one tape from an ex where the segues just make me squeal and sigh. too bad he's kinda gross. Squeal, sigh, eww.

When I was in Seattle for ODDSAC we went to this comic shop, and in the back they had "THE INNER SANCTUM" which was just a stuffy room crammed with antique looking comics and collectors items, as well as a HUGE wall lined with cassettes from tons of different artists. They even had my favourite Aerosmith album "Get a Grip" and I screamed a little bit. THE WEST COAST IS THE BEST! everyone come over here so we can swim in the ocean and be merry together.

    Still! Haha. I used to go to Maine a lot and visit my aunt and uncle who spend a lot of time up there in like a lake cabin. My memories of it include misquitoes, and summer weather that is like the early march weather down here.

    I feel like the weather is wrong here, haha. I feel like I would like it better in the north, maybe not as far north as Maine but my cousins live in Boston and I really like it there

    It is sad to see that tapes are out of style. I am still living in a cassette age, And age that has not progressed much. I like it that way. I hate the rush of technological boom.

    Feb 2011 i bought Akorn/Fambly s/t II on tape! my first tape since.... REM new adventures in hifi in 96? (i was DAMN late to the CD game!) and a few weeks back i got REM Green on tape so now i have REM #5 (document), 6 (green), 7 (out of time), 8 (automatik), 9 (monster), X (nu adventures / high fidelity) all on tape! first EP and first 2 albums on vine hell! reveal and monster on CD for some reason? but i mainly think of REM on tape! radiohead the bends on tape SOUL COUGHING RUBY VROOM! that's a biggie too! the akorn one is an edition of... 500? or maybe 300.... i can't remember but it was fun getting it for only 8 bucks and free download (so many cassette & vinyl now give you that free download option) TAPES & TAPES!

    My dad has a bunch of cassettes he got during the 80s - early 90s. Most of them are heavy metal and hair metal. So So I obviously don't listen to them. I forgot where he puts them now. But he hasn't used them since CDs started getting popular. ;))

    ha, I didn't know this thread existed! I love tapes. The thing I look for most in a car is if it has a tape player, airbags is second priority followed by engine, seatbelt etc. Anyway. I drove to Iowa and the whole time listened to Steven King tapes. It was rather hit and miss as some tapes had good sound quality and some had really shitty sound quality. Sometimes I miss the age of information wound around a rod protected by plastic. CD scratches really mess it up. The music and movie industry probably switched for cost effectiveness sake or somat.

    tapes and tapas! i've got a whole bunch more tapes now! experimental bands / synth poppish stuff / it's FUN! and the first 3 MWH albums on tape! cashet!
