Merriweather Post Pavillion

“My Girls”

Merriweather Post Pavillion

{ more } Track No. 2
Isn't much that I feel I need
a solid soul and the blood I bleed
With a little girl, and by my spouse
I only want a proper house

There isn't much that I feel I need:
a solid soul and the blood I bleed.
But with a little girl, and by my spouse
I only want a proper house

I don't care for fancy things
Or to take part in a pressured race.
But to provide for them when they ask
I will, with heart, on my father's grave

On my father's grave

I don't mean
To seem like I care about material things,
Like our social status,
I just want
Four walls and adobe slabs
For my girls

i totally agree. i was let down by this song when i saw them live. i thought that they were experimenting or something until i downloaded some of their live albums. this song has a lot of power with the drums. they should bring it on stage

I'm a huge animal collective fan, like most of you here. Am I the only one who thinks this song falls so short when they play it live? On the album it hits so hard; it comes to life with the heavy bass and drums, but when they play it live all that low end is gone. The song just kind of floats by.
What's with that? Why don't they get some kick ass drum and bass up in there like they do with Summertime Clothes, or Brother Sport?

watch this, you can pretty clearly hear it as adobe slabs.

I'm sorry folks but if you listen to the Taken By Trees cover it is very clearly "a dolby set". Unless someone lives in a house with "adobe slats". Ever notice when you google "adobe slats" or "adobe slabs" the results are a bunch of Animal Collective fans unsure of the lyrics? Whereas if you google "a dolby set" you get several links to an actual item that exists in reality. I'm just saying...

People, people.
A song is how a song is.
It is how you hear it and how
you interpret the songs meaning.

After all, Do you realise how much more a song's meaning changes when you actually figure out the lyrics? Possibly, the reason of why they don't have their lyrics published is because they want you to sing the song how you feel it?

@ DUH!, actually this isn't an official animal collective website. the website is run by a fan, so there's a possibility that the lyrics could be wrong on the website.

i think its rather humerous to hear people try to fill in the blanks like its some sort of adlib. this is music. any person who has had the pleasure of recording with a person who does not give a good goddamn the exact words or tone in which they presented their peice of art at that giving point in time should understand this and respect the fact that it could be infinite amount of things. much like a person playing a guitar riff, the guitarist might play it similar to the way they played it before but will still add the feeling that they felt at that very moment and may never play it that way again. stop trying to figure it out. its not science.

It's "social stance".

And the following...

"But to provide for them when they ask

Sounds completely wrong. The lyrics certainly aren't that, especially during the "Them when they ask" part, but from what hear this is what they're saying.

"But to provide from whence you ask,
I will work hard, on the father's grace"

But to switch from referring to his girls from a secondary to a direct position in the middle of the song doesn't make sense, so I'm probably wrong, but there's no way what's written down now is right.

It has to be "stats." Stats rhymes with slats.

I thought it was "I'm up out this place" for the father's grave line. I still think it is kind of funny that way, sort of like a speech to be given when quiting a job on wall street for the simpler life. I personally like some of the abstract dissonant animal collective songs from the more art albums, but this one shows a maturity most popular bands show in the opposite direction. Most modern bands albums get progressively isolating and arty as they "mature". AC was esoteric and off putting to many before but MPP is more inviting to a wider audience with lyrics that have more surface value, but still just as much coy humourous insinuations below the surface

i agree that ambiguity is key and to be embraced. in that vein, i first heard 'on my parking space' where here it is posted as 'on my father's grave.' call me a pluralist and a deconstructionist, but i love it both ways and care not what it really is.

this song is as close to perfection as anyone can get, in my opinion.
sentimentality, simplicity, the ability to make "I just want, four walls and adobe slabs, for my girls," catchy.

uhh who exactly posted these i assumed that these being on their website that it's as official as it gets, but in an interview they said sometimes they don't understand each other's lyrics, so i doubt it was posted by AC themselves, but if something were terribly far off i would think that they wouldn't allow it, so if it's similar don't bother posting i'm sick of seeing " i think it's slats, not slabs" interpret what you will and enjoy as AC has said. Nothing needs to be demystified, the ambiguity only makes it all the more enjoyable, if they wanted it all clear and understandable they would have made it that way
